Hello, candle lovers! At Singing Bear Candles, we believe our handcrafted, wood-wick candles are more than just decor—they transform any space into a cozy sanctuary with their warm glow and delightful aroma. To help you enjoy your candles to their fullest potential, we’ve put together a simple guide on candle care.
By following these tips, your candles will burn beautifully, last longer, and create the soothing ambiance you deserve.
1. The Importance of the First Burn
The first time you burn your Singing Bear Candle is crucial! Why? Because this sets the stage for an even, long-lasting burn throughout the life of your candle.
Allow Your Wax to Melt Across the Entire Surface: When lighting your candle for the first time, let it burn until the wax completely melts all the way to the edges of the jar. This prevents “tunneling,” where the wax only melts around the wick and leaves unused wax along the sides. Tunneling shortens your candle’s life and reduces your experience of its glow and scent.
How Long is Long Enough? A helpful guideline is to let your candle burn for one hour per inch of its diameter. For instance, if you’re enjoying one of our Libbey Rocks Glass or Frosted Amber Glass candles, which measure 3 inches in diameter, you’ll want to let it burn for about 3 hours to ensure an even melt pool. Don’t rush it; let your candle work its magic.
2. Wood-Wick Care: Keep That Crackle Alive
Singing Bear Candles feature a natural wood wick, giving you that soothing crackle reminiscent of a cozy fireplace. Here’s how to care for it:
Trim Your Wick Before Each Burn: Before relighting your candle, gently trim the wood wick to about 1/8 inch with a wood-wick trimmer or even your fingers. This removes charred wood and ensures a clean flame.
What Happens If You Don’t Trim? An untrimmed wick can lead to larger, uncontrollable flames, uneven burning, or a candle that won’t stay lit. Think of it as a little maintenance to help your candle perform at its best.
Relighting a Wood Wick Tip: If your wick struggles to reignite, remove any excess charred wood (after the candle has cooled) and give it another go.
3. General Candle Care Tips
To ensure the safety and longevity of your candle, keep these additional tips in mind:
Limit the Burn Time: While it’s tempting to let your candle burn all day, we recommend limiting each session to 4 hours. This prevents overheating and protects the jar.
Place Your Candle on a Stable, Heat-Resistant Surface: Always select a burn-safe location away from drafts, pets, and children.
Keep Your Candle Clean: If soot starts to form on the jar, simply extinguish the flame and, once cool, wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
4. Safety First: Handle with Care
As much as we love the beauty and warmth of candles, safety always comes first.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep it away from flammable items and materials.
Always extinguish your candle using a candle snuffer to avoid wax splatter.

Caring for your Singing Bear Candle properly isn’t just about prolonging its life—it’s about creating a beautiful experience every time you light it. Whether it’s the soft crackle of the wood wick or the gentle glow dancing in your room, these small rituals can enhance your enjoyment.
